Rep. Pulong Duterte faces criminal charges over bar incident

Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte is facing criminal complaint for alleged physical injuries and grave threats over an alleged incident in a Davao City bar wherein a circulated video showed Duterte confronting and attacking an individual.

Prosecutor General Richard Anthony Fadullon on Friday said the Department of Justice (DOJ’s) main office in Manila received the complaint, which was filed by a 37-year-old Kristone John Patria from Davao City.

The complainant alleged in a sworn statement that Duterte physically attacked and attempted to stab him inside Hearsay Gastropub in Barangay Obrero around 3 a.m. on 23 February 2025.

A video of the incident, which circulated online, showed Duterte seemingly raising his fist at another man and allegedly threatening him with a sharp weapon during their conversation.

The dispute was caused by a payment to a group of women Patria had allegedly arranged for a private gathering at the request of Duterte and their mutual acquaintance, businessman Charlie Tan.

The violence allegedly began after one of Duterte’s bodyguards failed to receive a companion and another woman complained about receiving only ₱1,000, far below the ₱13,000 she claimed was promised.

The video was submitted as evidence before the DOJ.

Patria took almost three months to file the complaint because of the family’s influence over the city.

“Dahil po ma-impluwensiya ang kanilang pamilya doon sa Davao City, kaya po hindi na po ako gumawa ng aksyon para kalabanin sya,” he said.

According to the Revised Penal Code, Article 282 or grave threats, involves warning or intimidating a person with harm to their life, honor, property or family.

If found guilty, violators may face arresto mayor or imprisonment from one month and one day to six months, as well as a fine of up to P100,000.

The penalty depends on certain circumstances if the threat involves a condition – then the penalty is one degree lower than the punishment for the crime threatened.

And if the offender did not proceed with the threat, then the penalty is lowered by two degrees.

A statement from the lawmaker is yet to be released.

Pulong is one of the sons of former President Rodrigo Duterte and is currently facing complaints related to drug smuggling and graft concerning a P6.4 billion crystal meth shipment in Valenzuela City in 2017.

He and Vice President Sara Duterte’s husband – Atty. Manases Carpio, were tagged by Bureau of Customs (BOC) broker Mark Ruben Taguba as alleged members of the “Davao Group,” which supposedly used its “influence” to facilitate drug smuggling.
