The Recto clan’s bid for top political posts in Batangas raises questions about dynasty, strategy, and power consolidation, especially with former Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto's sons coming into the picture.
Her sons, namely Luis Manzano and Ryan Christian Recto, are now also running for a position in Batangas despite being known as celebrities in the showbiz industry. However, many still criticize the Rectos if they could bring experience and continuity in governance in the province.
The Recto clan vying for top positions in Batangas
Veteran actress and Former Governor Vilma Santos-Recto decided to run again as Batangas governor for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections. She served Batangas from 2007 to 2016 as governor and served for 2 consecutive terms as congresswoman of the sixth district.
Alongside Vilma is her running mate and son, Luis Manzano. Despite still being active as an actor, Luis started to get into politics and seek the vice governor post.
Meanwhile, Vilma’s other son, Ryan Christian Recto eyes a congressional seat as a representative of the 6th District of Batangas, a position that was formerly occupied by his father Ralph Recto.
Why did Vilma’s sons decide to run for public office?
During one of the Rectos’ campaign rallies, Vilma admitted that she is already old for public office and needs wisdom from a ‘younger blood’ to help her with the campaign, which happens to be Luis and Ryan.
Luis said that it was destiny that brought him into politics, where he can exercise public service.
“We all have an obligation to serve. In what capacity, it depends on what fate lays out for you. I believe that if you’ve been given life by a higher power, you have an obligation to help your fellow human beings,” he said.
Due to much backlash received by the Recto trio, Vilma defended her sons, explaining that both of them were exposed to public service at a very young age, making them qualified.
“Nararamdaman ko, may puso na sila doon…Noong mayor ako, Ryan was only three years old…dito na rin sila lumaki, sa public service na nakita nila sa amin, at naranasan nila iyon nang magsilbi sila," she added.
Exploring the Recto clan’s hold on Batangas politics
Apart from being the ‘star for all seasons,’ Vilma was an established public servant in Batangas, where she served as provincial governor from 2007-2016.
Before being the Finance chief, Ralph Recto, Vilma’s spouse, served as Batangas 4th district representative from 1992 to 2001 and in 2022, he won as a congressman in the 6th district.
One Batangas, a strong local party in the province, is headed by Ralph. Currently, Vilma, together with Luis and Ryan, are running under the said party, strengthening their Batangas political power.
